St. Louis hail history
We compiled NOAA's Storm Events records for St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Jefferson County, 1996 to June 2026, into one place. Here's when hail hits, how bad 2025 was, and every golf-ball-size hail day by date.
- Hail season is March through June. 651 of 769 reports of hail 1 inch or larger (85%) came in those four months. April is the peak (Source: NOAA Storm Events).
- 2025 was the most active year since 1996: 164 reports of 1-inch-plus hail in the four counties, against 5 to 29 a year from 2016 to 2024 (140 in those 9 years combined).
- Golf-ball hail (1.75 in or larger) is not rare: 76 days since 1996, 26 of them since 2016.
- If your roof is more than a few years old, it has probably seen at least one severe hail day. How to check it safely

Severe hail by year, 2006–2026
What happened in 2025? Two days stand out. March 14, 2025: 78 hail reports, up to 2 inches, across all four counties. May 16, 2025: 64 reports, up to 2.5 inches, on the same day the EF3 tornado crossed north St. Louis (Source: NWS St. Louis). If you haven't had your roof looked at since then, it's worth doing. Missouri insurance policies set their own deadlines for claims, so check yours.

By county
| County | Hail reports | 1 inch or larger | Tornado reports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jefferson County | 253 | 166 | 24 |
| St. Charles County | 296 | 181 | 24 |
| St. Louis City | 81 | 58 | 5 |
| St. Louis County | 522 | 364 | 39 |
St. Louis County shows the most reports partly because it's the largest and most populated: more people and more spotters mean more reports. Don't read the county totals as "hail risk per house."
Is my roof likely to have hail damage?
- Hail under 1 inch rarely damages a sound asphalt roof. It can still dent gutters and screens.
- 1 to 1.75 inches can bruise shingles and knock off granules, especially on older roofs.
- 1.75 inches and up (golf ball) is the NWS's "considerable damage" category (Source: NWS). If your area had a day like that, get an inspection.
Hail reports are points on a map. A storm can drop large hail on one street and miss the next, so the best evidence is your own: dented gutters and vents, granules at the downspouts, and damage on the storm side of the house. What to check, and what to do first
About this data
- Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, bulk "details" files for 1996–2026, downloaded October 22, 2026 (Source: NOAA Storm Events). US government data, public domain.
- Area: St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Jefferson County, Missouri. County-level events only.
- These are reports, not storms. One storm can produce dozens of reports. Report counts also depend on how many people are watching and reporting.
- Size threshold changed in 2010. That's when the NWS raised its severe-hail threshold from 3/4 inch to 1 inch, and smaller hail is rarely recorded after that. So we compare years using only reports of 1 inch or larger.
- Lag: NOAA publishes data about 75 days after each month ends, so the newest months fill in later. We refresh this page every spring and after major storms.
- What we did: we filtered NOAA's files to these four counties and to hail, thunderstorm wind and tornado events, then counted them. We didn't change any values. Downloads: by county and year · by month · by year · large-hail days.
- Reuse: you're welcome to use our tables and charts with a link to this page.
